Privacy is
our main concern here in the network and if you read the Ideology you will understand
it.
In order to ensure the users privacy; here are some recommendations and information. You should always connect using a secure/ssl connection on port 6697 For that some irc clients need you to install an extra package called openssl. Get it here (windows) The network offers a few ways to keep your privacy private. Once you login, the server will mask your real ip connection ( 217.234.23.56 ) ( you will get something like: <user> is connecting from *@Freethinker-frm.ma.cable.rcn.com) This will mask your host by default and only the chatroom operators will see it this way. Note: that not even chatroom operators will get your real ip ( 217.234.23.56 ) Every other user will only see that ip like this: 5D972706.F5AB87BD.992711C3.IP The only people to see your real ip in th network will be the network administrators and it is for administration purposes only. If you wish to have you own custom ip host mask , you are free to request one by asking an administrator or simply resquesting it to the network services. Examples: Hostmask: spiider@FreeThinker.Co-Administrator Hostmask: S@ScRaMbLe.user.FreeThinker Hostmask: FreeMind@Network.Services Assuming that you are connected using ssl all your activity in the network is encrypted and unreadable from the outside. Is this enough ? Deppends on you. You can still enforce it more. If you wish you can also encrypt your private chats and chatrooms even being connected with ssl. This will ensure you that even if anyone in the network tried to get a way to spy on you; it cant ! To do this you will to use a blowfish addon in your irc client like Fish or Mircryptation. If you are using mIRC we advise the use of Mircryptation since it allows a wider range of encryption options. Your chat will look like this to anyone in the network that is not using YOUR encryption key: < testing-fish> +OK wB7M.MpY/M1XKLiE0KZQAG.1YOUM0XAQ1b1XShSO1nn5pK0h9nfh074z3y/sDMDe1RTJ1P1 As you can see it all about how you will choose to keep your privacy private. (all this will get you 2 times encrypted) However if you are really paranoid and you have the right to be if you wish. You can even enforce this even more by using the TOR network as a bridge of connections. To use TOR all you have to to is to set your computer software of choice to use the tor network. Check here how it works. Once you connect to TOR your connection be encrypted and passing by many random computers on the internet. None of these computer will be able to read you because TOR encrypts it all. TOR will be a bridge between you and last place where you wish to connect. Once using TOR, all you need to do know is to login with ssl to the network and use the blowfish addon for your private chats. This way not even the network admins know your real ip or where you come from. Nickname records and email: Registering a nickname will give you advantages, like the use of custom ip hostmasks. When you register you may be requested to put an email address. The network does not use the users email unless requested by the user. Note: If you lose you nickname password the network cannot give you the password. This happens because all user's passwords are encrypted by default. The network staff does not have access to them. You will have to request an admin to solve the problem for you in another way. Network custom modules: Every irc network out there has and uses it's own specific modules. These modules allow extra features to be implemented. In order for you to know what we are running here; simply type /module or /modules once you are connected to to get a list and info of the modules that the hub is running. For more information about all the network software check the Thanks menu for a list of software that is being used as well as its websites, it's source code and the programmers |
